The Spy Who Loved Me

When a British and submarine vanishes while on patrol, 007 is called back to London by M. James Bond travels to Cairo to follow up a lead where he encounters Major Anya Amasova from the KGB, also known as Agent XXX. The Russians have also lost a submarine and she too is working on finding out why.

In Egypt their superiors order them to join forces for the common good and they arrive in Sardinia following a clue linking Karl Stromberg to the missing subs.

Posing as a marine biologist, Bond and Amasova are granted an audience with Stromberg on his base, Atlantis. Stromberg who reveals his love of the sea and how humanity’s future may depend on building an underwater city.

Before leaving Atlantis, Bond notices that a model of Stromberg’s supertanker, Liparus,  has a strange bulge at the bow; and when they get ashore the pair are attacked while driving in Bond’s Lotus Esprit, but they escape by driving into the sea, at which point the Lotus turns into a submarine.

They then board a US submarine while tracking Liparus, but the submarine is captured by Stromberg; Bond and Amasova are singled out and taken to Stromberg, who reveals his plan to start a nuclear confrontation and require life to live under the surface of the sea. Helped by the crews of the captured submarines 007 must foil Stromberg’s plans and prevent World War III.

What we say

Essentially The Spy Who Loved Me is a remake of You Only Live Twice that features one of the 007 classic stunts in the pre-titles sequence and a classic gadget in the shape of the Lotus Esprit that turns into a submarine.

  • “Moneypenny, where’s 007?”
“He’s on a mission sir. In Austria. ”
“Well, tell him to pull out. Immediately.”
  • “Mmm, maybe I misjudged Stromberg. Any man who drinks Dom Perignon ’52 can’t be all bad.”
  • “Right. Now pay attention, 007. I want you to take great care of this equipment. There are one or two rather special accessories…”
“Q, have I ever let you down?”
  • “When one is in Egypt, one should delve deeply into its treasures.”
  • “Then how about a nightcap on the company? My company.”
