Auditions for next James Bond reportedly set for August

August could prove a decisive month in the search for the next James Bond.

Actors hoping to become the eighth official screen 007 are reportedly being contacted ahead of a fresh round of Bond 26 auditions scheduled for later this summer.

According to Deadline, director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman have begun informing selected candidates that they have advanced to the next stage of the casting process. Sources told the publication that Villeneuve has personally been making calls ahead of auditions expected to take place in August.

Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment and no actors have been officially confirmed.

Deadline reports that estimates of how many candidates will test vary considerably. Some sources suggested between five and seven actors, while others indicated the number could be considerably higher.

The reported auditions follow more than a year of work assembling the creative team behind the next Bond film. Since Amazon gained creative control of the franchise in 2025, the studio has appointed Pascal and Heyman as producers, selected Villeneuve to direct and hired Steven Knight to write the screenplay.

Casting director Nina Gold, whose involvement was announced in April, has also reportedly spent recent weeks meeting performers, including lesser-known actors who might yet force their way into contention.

Although Deadline stressed that no names have been confirmed, the publication noted that Harris Dickinson, Callum Turner and Jacob Elordi fit the type of actor believed to be under consideration.

Bond history suggests an audition is no guarantee of success. Before becoming 007, both Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan spent years associated with the role. Brosnan was widely expected to inherit Bond from Roger Moore in the 1980s before contractual obligations to Remington Steele prevented the move.

Daniel Craig’s path to Casino Royale was also far from straightforward. His casting was the subject of intense media speculation before he was unveiled as the sixth actor to play Bond in the Eon series in October 2005.

If Deadline’s information is correct, the long search for Craig’s successor may be approaching its final stages. The publication reports that Amazon MGM hopes to have its new Bond in place before the end of the year, potentially clearing the way for Bond 26 to enter production during 2027.
