Denis Villeneuve’s long-running connection to Hungary has led to speculation that Budapest could play a significant role in the production of Bond 26.
Denis Villeneuve’s relationship with Hungary has prompted speculation that Budapest could emerge as an important production base for Bond 26 as Amazon MGM continues development on the next James Bond film.
According to Budapest Reporter, Villeneuve’s work on Blade Runner 2049, Dune and Dune: Part Three helped establish a major production infrastructure in Hungary centred around Origo Studios and experienced local crews. Although no filming locations or studio bases have been announced for Bond 26, the report argues that Hungary fits naturally with Villeneuve’s established way of working. The director has repeatedly returned to Budapest for productions involving large practical sets, extensive visual effects work and controlled studio environments.
That could become important as the next Bond film develops under new creative leadership.
Bond 26 will be the first film produced since Amazon MGM took creative control of the franchise from Eon Productions in 2025, ending more than 60 years of stewardship from the Broccoli family. David Heyman and Amy Pascal are producing the film, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay. Villeneuve, who was officially announced as director in June 2025, previously said: “Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.”
For Bond fans, the Hungary speculation is particularly interesting because Pinewood Studios has traditionally served as the main production home of the franchise since Dr No in 1962. While the series has frequently used international locations and occasionally overseas studio facilities — including work on Casino Royale at Barrandov Studios in Prague — Pinewood remained the operational centre of Bond production for decades.
However, Pinewood’s availability has become more complicated in recent years. Disney signed a long-term lease agreement at Pinewood reportedly running until 2029, meaning Bond 26 may need to rely more heavily on alternative studio space. The report suggests Budapest would not necessarily replace Pinewood entirely, but could potentially serve as a major production hub if Villeneuve chooses to continue using the infrastructure and crews he has relied upon for several films.
Hungary has increasingly become a centre for large-scale action and spy productions in recent years. The article highlights films and series including Red Sparrow, Atomic Blonde, Black Widow, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and The Day of the Jackal, all of which used Budapest’s ability to double for multiple international settings. Villeneuve’s own productions have repeatedly utilised Hungarian crews experienced in large practical builds, second-unit action work and effects-heavy filmmaking.
Bond 26 is unlikely to begin production until Villeneuve completes work connected to Dune: Part Three, which is due to arrive in late 2026. That points towards filming beginning sometime in 2027 ahead of a likely 2028 release.
