Bond returns to the console with First Light preview events

Calvin Dyson was one of a select group of Bond fans given serious play time to shape their first impressions of 007 First Light.

When IO Interactive invited a number of Bond commentators to preview 007 First Light, expectations appear to have been modest. Yet what unfolded in the UK—and reportedly mirrored at similar events in the United States—was something far more substantial: extended, hands-on sessions with a new James Bond adventure arriving after more than a decade in the wilderness for 007 video games.

Among those in attendance was high-profile Bond YouTuber Calvin Dyson, whose introduction to the world of 007 came not from the cinema but from Goldeneye 007. In his video report, Calvin sets out to do more than simply recount the event. He frames his coverage around two central questions: how the game plays, and how it portrays James Bond himself. Drawing on roughly three and a half hours of gameplay across three levels, he offers a structured overview of mechanics, tone and narrative direction.

Along the way, Calvin also incorporates insights from IO Interactive’s development team. He speaks with franchise art director Rasmus Poulsen about the visual influences behind the game, from the colour palettes of the early films to the demands of modern design, and with gameplay director Andreas Krogh about new features such as the bluff mechanic. These conversations help place his impressions within the wider creative thinking behind First Light, rather than presenting them in isolation.

What emerges is a picture of a project attempting to reconcile legacy with innovation—something Calvin returns to repeatedly as he breaks down his experience.
