Skyfall has now overtaken The Dark Knight Rises at the box office to become the seventh biggest earner of all time according to the latest figures on Box Office Mojo.
The figure for the 23rd James Bond film now stands at $1,093.5 million after its opening in China, with The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King ahead of it by around $27 million.
Just for clarification, I read an article in the mainstream UK media recently in which the journalist wrote that Skyfall was demonstrably the most popular James Bond film ever. While Skyfall has certainly been popular it is a mistake to think that box office take equates to absolute popularity. Inflation is one reason, but while cinema attendances in the UK were higher in 2012, the number of people seeing films on the big screen does not compare at all with 50 years ago when many houses had no television, let alone DVD, Blu-Ray or streaming.
