Sam Mendes back in the frame for Bond 24?

Earlier in the year it was finally announced that Sam Mendes, against the hopes of Eon Productions and many fans, would not be returning to direct Bond 24.

Although at the time of Skyfall‘s release the British director appeared to be reluctant to return immediately to the series, telling interviewers he had done all he could with Bond at the moment, it did seem at one point that he would sign up for the follow up to what by some measures is the most successful Bond film ever.

It was therefore surprising to read on MI6 and other movie websites this morning that there is a rumour that he is in talks with Sony about directing Bond 24 after all. MI6 says that a Deadline article (not linked to) states that Eon is willing to wait for Mendes’ theatre projects to finish, meaning a 2014 start at the earliest.

We’ll see.

I thought Mendes was supposed to be directing King Lear. This is playing out more like Hamlet.
