First Casino Royale reviews

The press were invited to a screening of Casino Royale on Friday and the surprise is that the reviews are overwhelmingly positive about both Daniel Craig and the direction of the new film.

Craig has been compared favourably to Sean Connery by several reviewers, with the Mirror reviewer claiming that it’s one of the best 007 films ever – hang on, wasn’t this the same paper that has spent the last year criticising Daniel Craig at every opportunity – while the Times announces “Craig is up there with the best: he combines Sean Connery’s athleticism and cocksure swagger with Timothy Dalton’s thrilling undercurrent of stone-cold cruelty”.

This all sounds like good news for Bond fans. After the lacklustre plots of the Brosnan era, we may have got back to the James Bond we’ve been missing for years. And further than that, we may have got someone closer to Ian Fleming’s Bond.
