Bond producers to receive honorary Academy Awards

Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will be awarded the prestigious Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award by the Academy.

Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the dynamic duo behind the James Bond film franchise, are set to receive the esteemed Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This honour, reserved for producers whose work epitomises high-quality motion picture production, will be presented at the Governors Awards on 17th November 2024.

Wilson and Broccoli have continued the legacy of Albert R “Cubby” Broccoli, Barbara’s father, who was instrumental in bringing Ian Fleming’s iconic British spy to the silver screen. Under their stewardship, the Bond series has not only thrived but evolved, maintaining its relevance through six decades and twenty-five films.

The Thalberg Award, named after MGM’s renowned production head Irving Thalberg, is a special accolade given intermittently to recognise extraordinary producers. Unlike annual Oscars, this award celebrates a lifetime of exceptional contributions to cinema. Broccoli, notably, is the second woman ever to receive this accolade, marking a significant milestone in the film industry.

Their recognition comes alongside honours for Quincy Jones, celebrated for his extensive work in music and film scoring; Juliet Taylor, a legendary casting director known for her collaborations with Woody Allen; and Richard Curtis, the screenwriter behind beloved films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love Actually.
