Marcos Kontze from Brazil shares his collection.
When and how did you first get bitten by the Bond bug?
In mid 1990’s when the GoldenEye videogame for Nintendo 64 was released. As a 11 years old kid, I was amazed by it. In the coming weeks and months after I’ve played the game, I found all the 18 Bond movies launched until then, lined up in a shelf, in it’s glorious VHS covers, on a local video rental store. I associated immediately the 007 logo from the game, to the movie covers.
I rented and watched all of them in less than 10 days. A couple of months after that, a famous celebrity magazine in Brazil named CARAS, began the JAMES BOND 007 COLLECTION, releasing fortnightly a Bond movie in VHS and a special magazine covering all the details about the movie, behind the scenes info and photos. And the trigger has been pulled, I became a Bond fan since then…
What’s your favourite item in your collection and why?
It’s very difficult select one specific item in my collection. But I’ll go with three of them. First of all, are the first editions of Ian Fleming books released in Brazil. The second one, is the video where Daniel Craig wishes me Happy Birthday, during The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo premiere in London, on December 12th, 2011. Last, but not least, are the memories from the set visit on location in Mexico City during the filming of SPECTRE’s pre-title sequence, and the World Premiere of the movie in London. It is still very surreal to me.
What item would you most like to add?
Another tough answer. But I’d really love to have the licensed Golden Gun, a non-working replica of the Q-Boat from “The World Is Not Enough” and the limited edition Aston Martin DB5 1/3 scale model. That would be a dream.
What’s your biggest obstacle to collecting, or is there a tip you’d like to share?
Being a Brazilian, the biggest obstacle that we have to face, is that we need to import each and every item we want to have. And some of them, the companies won’t ship to Brazil. Of course, another great obstacle is the currency, which it’s not favorable at all. So, being a Bond fan and collector in Brazil, is a challenge, because even the books launched in the UK are quite expensive to buy.
I’m honoured to be part of this VIP list of Bond fans, and in some way, represent my country in the Bond universe.
