MI6 headquarters at Vauxhall Cross in London — the real MI6 behind the Bond films

The real MI6 headquarters at Vauxhall Cross became Bond’s definitive on-screen HQ before being destroyed in the Craig era.

While it may not be on the list of top sightseeing attractions for most visitors to London, the real-world MI6 headquarters is located at Vauxhall Cross on the south bank of the River Thames. For James Bond fans with some time on their hands, a visit to this iconic building offers a direct look at the real-world home of the Secret Intelligence Service. The facility has appeared in several of the films, including the Thames boat chase in The World Is Not Enough, and later in Skyfall and SPECTRE, where it is first attacked and ultimately destroyed.

The history of the real MI6 HQ at Vauxhall Cross

The Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6, traces its origins back to 1909, when it was established as part of the Secret Service Bureau. For most of its history, the organisation operated without official public acknowledgement, only being formally recognised by the British government in 1994.

The Vauxhall Cross location has been in use since 1995, with headquarters previously at Century House in Lambeth, a far less conspicuous office building that reflected the service’s traditionally low profile. The move brought together staff who had previously been spread across a number of locations, consolidating operations into a single secure headquarters. Designed by Terry Farrell and constructed by John Laing, the National Audit Office put the cost at £135 million for the basic structure and an additional £13 million to adapt it to the special requirements of the service. These include enhanced security, protection against bomb blasts and countermeasures against electronic eavesdropping, as well as a tunnel leading under the Thames to Whitehall, reflecting the changing security environment of the post-Cold War period.

Its distinctive riverside location and striking design, combined with MI6’s newly acknowledged public profile, would later make it an obvious choice for use as MI6 headquarters in the James Bond films, and one of the most recognisable Bond filming locations.

In September 2000, the building was hit with an RPG-22 anti-tank missile. Hitting the eighth floor, the damage was superficial and there were no serious injuries. The attack was later attributed to an Irish Republican group.

Vauxhall Cross in the James Bond films

Vauxhall Cross first appeared as MI6 headquarters in Goldeneye (1995), marking the first time the real-world headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service was used directly in the series. It provided a clear and recognisable physical identity for MI6, grounding the films in a real London location rather than an anonymous office.

The building features prominently in The World Is Not Enough, where Bond pursues an assassin along the Thames in a high-speed boat chase that begins at MI6 itself.

It also appears in later films in the series, continuing to serve as the headquarters of MI6 until Skyfall (2012), when the building becomes the target of a bombing orchestrated by Raoul Silva. The explosion damages the building and forces MI6 to abandon it as a working base.

By the time of SPECTRE, the building stands empty and is marked for demolition as part of a wider reorganisation of the intelligence services. In the film’s climax, it is destroyed entirely, bringing its role in the series to a definitive end.

MI6 Headquarters Location & How to Visit

If you are planning a James Bond tour of London, here is how to spot the building:

  • Address: 85 Albert Embankment, Vauxhall, London SE1 7TP
  • Nearest Station: Vauxhall Underground and National Rail Station (a 2-minute walk)
  • Best Viewing Spot: Walk across Vauxhall Bridge or down the Albert Embankment for the classic, unobstructed on-screen view.

Note: As an active, high-security government intelligence facility, the building is strictly closed to the public, and no internal tours are permitted.

Legacy

Although the real MI6 continues to operate from Vauxhall Cross, its destruction in the films marked the end of one of the most recognisable locations in the James Bond series within the continuity of the Daniel Craig era.

Since its introduction in Goldeneye, the building has defined the on-screen identity of MI6 in a way that earlier films never fully established, giving the service a clear and recognisable London headquarters.

With Bond 26 expected to be a reboot, Vauxhall Cross could return as MI6 headquarters, restoring one of the most familiar visual elements of the modern films.

The SIS building isn’t glamorous, but it is unmistakably part of Bond’s world: concrete, glass, secrecy and government machinery. My SIS t-shirt was inspired by the training scenes in Skyfall, when Bond is back at MI6 and being tested after Istanbul. It is the institutional side of 007: fitness tests, fluorescent light, clipped instructions, and the sense that he is only useful if he can still do the job. I designed it for myself first, then made it available when other fans showed interest.
