A new limited edition single malt uses the 1971 Bond film as both blueprint and reference point.
The Macallan Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release
When Diamonds Are Forever arrived in cinemas in 1971, it confirmed James Bond’s place in a world where good taste mattered as much as brute force. Fifty-five years on, that idea has been distilled into a bottle.
The Macallan has unveiled the Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release, a limited edition single malt created in partnership with the Bond franchise. It follows the James Bond 60th Anniversary Release from 2022 and continues a relationship that has tied the Speyside whisky maker to 007 on screen and off.
Bond fans will note that this release leans heavily on one of Bond’s quieter skills: his knowledge of wine. Distilled in 2007 and matured for 18 years, the whisky has been crafted using a mix of sherry seasoned European and American oak casks, alongside American oak casks that previously held red wine. The choice is a direct nod to the moment in Diamonds Are Forever where Bond’s wine knowledge helps him read a situation correctly.
Whisky Maker Russell Greig said the aim was to reflect the film’s shifts in tone and misdirection. The result, he explained, is a whisky that appears dark and reserved but opens up with unexpected lightness. On the nose there is polished oak, vanilla and dried fruit, while the palate brings caramel, cocoa-dusted truffles and gentle spice before a long finish.
Bottled at 45.5 per cent ABV, the whisky takes its natural colour from the casks alone. The hue is intended to echo the red and orange sandstone of the Nevada desert, linking back to the film’s Las Vegas setting. Design plays a central role too. The bottle and presentation box draw on original Diamonds Are Forever production artwork held in the Bond archives, including references to the laser satellite and the opening title sequence.
Jaume Ferras, Creative Director at The Macallan, pointed out that the brand has appeared in more than 290 film and television productions. Honouring Bond, he said, reflects a shared respect for storytelling and detail that has endured for decades.
The Diamonds Are Forever 55th Anniversary Release is available now via themacallan.com and at The Macallan Estate Boutique, priced at $750, with wider US retail availability from March 2026.
