Paul Haggis arrested for sexual assault

Filmmaker detailed by police while attending an arts festival in Italy.

Filmmaker Paul Haggis was arrested by Italian police on Sunday, accused of sexual assault. The Canadian writer, producer and director is in Italy for Allora Fest, a new international festival of cinema, art and music which opens on Tuesday.

Haggis contributed to the screenplays of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, although he submitted an unfinished draft of the latter thanks to a writers’ strike at the time.

He is alleged to have forced a non-Italian woman to have sex over two days and left at a local airport on Sunday morning, where she was assisted by staff and police officers, before being treated in hospital. She later filed a police complaint, leading to the arrest of Haggis on Sunday.

Haggis has denied the charges through his lawyer.
