James Fleming, novelist and nephew of Ian Fleming, dies at 80

James Fleming, the accomplished author and editor who revitalised The Book Collector and carried on his family’s distinguished literary legacy, passed away on 22nd November 2024 at the age of 80.

James R Fleming was born on 26th February 1944 in London, the son of Richard Fleming and the nephew of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Growing up in a family known for its contributions to literature and military service, James carved his own path as a novelist and editor, leaving a lasting imprint on the world of books and storytelling.

In 2016, James assumed ownership of The Book Collector, the journal on rare books and bibliophilia originally founded by Ian Fleming in 1952. Two years later, he became its editor, bringing fresh energy and a familial connection to the role. Under his stewardship, the publication flourished as a vital resource for book lovers, reflecting his own passion for the literary arts and the history of books.

James Fleming was also a novelist of note. His works included the historical novels The Temple of Optimism (2000) and Thomas Gage (2003), praised for their rich narratives and attention to detail. He further demonstrated his versatility with the Charlie Doig trilogy—Cold Blood (2006), White Blood (2008), and Rising Blood (2011)—a series of thrillers following a Scottish-Russian adventurer through harrowing escapades in Europe and Asia.

In 2021, James published Bond Behind the Iron Curtain, an insightful study exploring how Ian Fleming’s Bond novels were received and adapted in the Soviet Union. This work showcased his dedication to literary scholarship and his connection to his uncle’s legendary creation.

For the past two decades, James lived in the remote North of Scotland, where he found inspiration in the landscape and devoted himself to writing and editing. He remained deeply engaged with the literary world, offering a unique voice that blended his family’s legacy with his own creative and intellectual pursuits.

James Fleming is survived by his family and a legacy of novels, scholarship, and editorial excellence. As both a novelist and a custodian of Ian Fleming’s literary heritage, he leaves an indelible mark on the world of literature.
