FTC decision on MGM takeover expected soon

We should learn decision on Amazon’s proposed purchase of MGM within the next couple of weeks.

Reuters is reporting that Amazon’s takeover of MGM may be days away, with deadlines for regulators in Europe and the United States due to expire imminently.

According to the article European regulators are set to clear the acquisition, with a 15th March deadline – today. On the other side of the Atlantic the FTC deadline is said to be “mid-March”, although there is no mention of how likely it is that the takeover goes ahead unchallenged. Amazon is said to have “substantially complied with the FTC’s requests for information about the deal”.

The FTC has a broader antitrust probe open on Amazon though, so it may not be plain sailing for the internet retailing giant.

Update 18:30 CET: The European Union has given the MGM takeover the green light. Over go you, FTC (thanks to Bill Koenig for the link).
