The actor who played the flamboyantly sinister Mr Wint in Diamonds Are Forever has died at the age of 92.
Bruce Glover, the seasoned character actor best known for his portrayal of the assassin Mr Wint in the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, died on 12th March aged 92. His son, actor Crispin Glover, confirmed the news in a post on Instagram.
“Bruce Herbert Glover May 2, 1932 – March 12, 2025.”
Glover’s performance as Mr Wint—one half of a sadistic gay hitman duo alongside Putter Smith’s Mr Kidd—remains one of the most distinctive in the Bond series. Glover leant into this role with a theatrical, slightly camp energy that added to Wint’s unnerving charm. The result was a character whose genteel manner only made his acts of violence more unsettling.
Born in Chicago in 1932, Glover grew up during the Depression and was drafted into the Korean War in 1953. It was after his return from military service that he discovered acting, first on the stage and later on television. He appeared in original Broadway productions of The Lion in Winter, Mother Courage and Her Children and The Night of the Iguana before finding regular work on television in series like Mission: Impossible, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason and The A-Team.
His role in Diamonds Are Forever secured him a lasting place in Bond history. In a franchise celebrated for its villains, Wint and Kidd stood out not only for their elaborate methods of assassination—scorpion in a bath, flaming kebab, bomb in a cake—but for the oddball chemistry between them. It was a departure from the cold professionalism of earlier henchmen, and Glover helped set a tone that future Bond films would occasionally revisit: a mix of cruelty and camp.
He went on to appear in films such as Chinatown and Walking Tall, frequently playing off-kilter or sinister characters. He never lost the ability to unnerve an audience. But for Bond fans, it is Mr Wint’s ignominious end—strapped to a bomb and hurled overboard—that lingers longest.
