Bond fans left waiting as Barbara Broccoli revives Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

With no news on Bond 26, Barbara Broccoli’s latest project has fans questioning the franchise’s future.

Barbara Broccoli has turned her attention to a new adaptation of Ian Fleming’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, developed in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Eon Productions. While the magical flying car is another product of Fleming’s imagination, the announcement adds to growing frustrations among Bond fans, who are eagerly awaiting updates on Bond 26.

Revisiting Fleming’s flying car

This isn’t Broccoli’s first experience with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In 2002, she co-produced the West End stage musical, which became the longest-running show at the London Palladium. The play brought Fleming’s whimsical 1964 novel to life with elaborate stagecraft and songs that captured the original film’s charm. Now, Broccoli is returning to the source material for a fresh screen adaptation, though details about its tone or creative direction remain under wraps.

The novel, written as a children’s story for Fleming’s son Caspar, may seem worlds apart from the high-stakes espionage of 007. Yet, Fleming’s love for gadgets and thrilling escapades is evident in both the adventures of the Potts family and James Bond. The connection, however, does little to ease the concerns of Bond fans who feel the franchise has been sidelined.

A pattern of detours

Broccoli’s involvement in non-Bond projects has raised eyebrows before. Earlier this year, film producer Ashok Amritraj, brother of Octopussy actor Vijay Amritraj, revealed he was collaborating with Broccoli on two films. One of these projects is a modern adaptation of Othello with Daniel Craig. It now seems likely that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the second film Amritraj referred to.

For Bond fans, these ventures suggest that Broccoli’s attention is divided at a time when the franchise is in need of direction. Since Daniel Craig’s departure after No Time to Die, the franchise has lacked concrete updates. The long-anticipated reinvention of 007 has been described by Broccoli as a process that “will take time,” but the absence of news has left many fans feeling adrift. Broccoli’s decision to focus on other projects may indicate a strategic pause, but with every passing announcement that doesn’t involve MI6, frustrations grow louder.

While Broccoli’s creative instincts are undeniably ambitious, this expansion comes as fans are desperate for reassurance that Bond will return to screens sooner rather than later. The announcement of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a reminder that Fleming’s imagination extends far beyond spies and martinis, but it also highlights the tension between celebrating his broader legacy and the growing impatience of Bond’s loyal audience.

For Bond fans, the question remains: where is 007?
