The studio is planning its own international theatrical distribution arm as its deal with Warner Bros. nears expiration.

Amazon MGM Studios is preparing to launch its own international theatrical distribution arm, a move that will give it direct control over its films’ global releases. With its current overseas deal with Warner Bros. set to expire at the end of the year, the studio is aiming to take charge of its biggest titles—including the James Bond franchise.
In August 2022, MGM announced that Warner Bros. would handle international distribution for its films, replacing Universal Pictures. That agreement was set to begin with Bond 27, but Amazon’s plans to distribute its own films globally could change that arrangement. If the studio moves forward with its new strategy, it may take full control of 007’s next big-screen outing rather than relying on an external partner.
Historically, MGM has partnered with various studios to handle Bond’s international releases, with Universal managing No Time to Die outside North America. Longtime MGM marketing executives Gerry Rich and Stephen Bruno remain in place, ensuring continuity for the brand even as Amazon reshapes its approach.
Amazon’s renewed focus on theatrical releases has already paid off, with Creed III delivering a franchise-best $276 million worldwide. By establishing its own international arm, the company can maximise profits and control over marketing strategies rather than splitting revenues with distributors.
The studio is expected to move quickly, aiming for a 2026 rollout. With an expanding slate—including Mercy (starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson) and Project Hail Mary (with Ryan Gosling)—Amazon MGM Studios is clearly betting on a bigger global footprint. The company will make its first-ever appearance at CinemaCon in April, where it may reveal more details.
As for Bond, no timeline has been confirmed for the next film, but with Amazon MGM Studios looking to reshape its distribution model, the future of 007’s international release is once again in flux.
