James Bond recipes: Western Sandwich

In chapter 16 of Live And Let Die, James Bond stays in a cheap motel in Tampa. He’s had a rough night and sleeps until midday and immediately goes in search of breakfast. He has a three-decker western sandwich and coffee in a cafeteria, which while common in America isn’t something that many Europeans are familiar with.

The origins of the western sandwich are unclear, although one of the theories is that it was originally served to the western pioneers by Chinese chefs, similar to egg foo yung. The western sandwich is also called the Denver sandwich in parts of the United States and can be prepared as follows:

Ingredients

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon onion, finely sliced
  • 1 slice cooked ham, finely diced
  • Three slices of toast

Method

  1. On medium heat fry the green pepper and onions together for around three minutes until soft.
  2. Add the ham and stir.
  3. Pour in the beaten egg and mix well.
  4. Cook for 2 minutes then turn.
  5. After a minute cut the mixture in half. On one slice of toast place half the egg mixture. On top of this place a second slice of toast, the remaining egg and the final slice of toast on top.

Enjoy!
