After a prototype helicopter capable of withstanding an electromagnetic pulse is stolen from under the noses of the Royal Navy while demonstrating its capabilities in Monte Carlo, it is used in an attack on a Russian bunker in Severnaya.
The bunker is the control centre for the Goldeneye satellites, each of which is armed with an electromagnetic pulse weapon designed to destroy enemy communications and electronic equipment, one of which is used to destroy the complex’s capabilities.
James Bond is sent to St Petersburg to investigate the attack, where he learns that the head of the organisation responsible, Janus, is none other that his former colleague, Alec Trevelyan (006), who went missing in action while on assignment with 007 many years before.
After locating the dish used to control the rogue Goldeneye satellite to Cuba, 007 and Natalya Simonova infiltrate the Janus command centre where they learn of Trevelyan’s plan to destroy Britain’s economy.
What we say
While Goldeneye is hardly a return to classic style Bond films, Pierce Brosnan is at least likable in the role. However, the film retains too many comedy elements left over from the Roger Moore era, something that would plague all Brosnan’s films.
