Ian Fleming finally married Ann Rothermere in Jamaica on 24th March 1952 after an affair that lasted for years.
After her second husband finally divorced her in 1951 and finding herself pregnant Ann finally persuaded Fleming to end his bachelor days. It was while staying at his home in Goldeneye that he started writing Casino Royale.
He would later joke that he started writing to take his mind off his impending marriage. The couple were married at Port Maria town hall with Noel Coward and Cole Lesley as witnesses. The Fleming’s had a rather tempestuous marriage, which appeared to grind both of them down over the years, and both had affairs.
