Javier Bardem, who played Raoul Silva in Skyfall, was born in the Canary Islands (Spain) on 1st March 1969 and born into a long line of filmmakers and actors.
Bardem came to prominence in Spanish cinema with Jamón Jamón opposite a young Penélope Cruz. He turned down English speaking roles as his English was poor, finally gaining international recognition playing Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas in Before Night Falls (2000).
Since then he appeared briefly in Collateral (2004) opposite Tom Cruise, as an assassin in the Coen brothers’ No Country For Old Men (and Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona (2008), where he began the romance with Penelope ) Cruz, who he later married.
