Ian Fleming recycled: literary Bond moments in the films

September 12th, 2012 by

There is a scene in the book Casino Royale when Bond is about to place a bet that has the potential, if luck favours him, to wipe out Le Chiffre at baccarat, the reason he’s been sent by M to Royale-les-Eaux. Changes are always made when bringing a book to the big screen, and Casino Royale was no […]

James Bond as a lone operator

August 9th, 2012 by

One of the issues I have with the more recent James bond films, say since Goldeneye onwards, is now rather than 007 operating as a lone agent out on his mission – just like in the books – he instead has come to rely upon his boss, M, much too often.

Some initial thoughts on the Skyfall trailer

August 1st, 2012 by

Back in May when the Skyfall teaser trailer was released I felt rather disappointed, rather at odds with much of the James Bond fan base, who were overwhelmingly positive about it. However, the new trailer gives us much more to go on and my reservations of the time have now been replaced with something much more positive, so here I’m going to take a look at the thoughts that come to mind.

Skyfall: the clapperboard cut

June 27th, 2012 by

During principal photography for Skyfall a number of clapperboard photos were shared via the official 007 social media channels. In fact, unless we’ve missed any, Bond 23 had a total of 23 clapperboard photos released either intentionally, or (more likely) by coincidence. Anyway, we haven’t seen anyone else do this, so I thought it would be […]

Skyfall: where is it all heading? Part 2

June 7th, 2012 by

A couple of weeks ago I published an article on how I saw Skyfall shaping up following the release of the teaser trailer. Whatever my personal preferences, it’s highly unlikely that anyone involved at a senior level on Skyfall reads this […]

The immediate reaction in the Bond-o-sphere when the Skyfall teaser trailer was released was one of unrepentant fanboy squee.  The servers at 007.com went down and the world was atwitter with excitement at the beauty of the new trailer for the latest, as-yet unfinished film by director Sam Mendes. Everyone was happy. Well, as it […]

Skyfall: where is it all heading?

May 25th, 2012 by

Back in October I made 23 short videos about “Bond 23” as Skyfall was known back then. In the videos I discussed what I’d like to see in the new film and what I’d prefer for the filmmakers to avoid. Now that the first teaser trailer has been released and filming is approaching a close, […]

Heineken in Skyfall – so what?

April 10th, 2012 by

Heineken beer to make its debut in Skyfall

Why it doesn’t matter at all that 007 will be seen drinking Heineken in Skyfall. The recent announcement that James Bond would be seen drinking Heineken beer in Skyfall created headlines around the world, with much of the media reporting that was swapping his vodka martinis for beer. In fact, the most likely scenario is […]

All change in the recording studio as Bond franchise gets a new composer for Skyfall

February 8th, 2012 by

Skyfall

When production of the 23rd movie in the James Bond series began, many made the not unreasonable assumption that long time collaborator David Arnold would once again provide the score.  Having worked with the franchise for 14 years and provided the soundtrack for five 007 adventures, Arnold seemed like the obvious choice to compose the […]
