The book was originally written by Fleming for a series in the Sunday Times and later compiled into a book. For the series Fleming travelled around the world to view the cities through the eyes of a thriller writer.

The trips also allowed him to collect information for his books. Much of the travelogue feel of You Only Live Twice is the result of his time spent in Japan for the series.

According to our friends at The Spy Command the book was first touted as a TV project back in 1962. Instead that led to The Man From UNCLE, a television show in which Fleming was involved until forced to depart due to pressure from Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, then involved in getting the early Bond films off the ground.
